True Ghost Stories: The Old Man at the Bottom of the Stairs

I grew up in Orange County, California. An old man lived in a house around the block from me when I was growing up. His family had gone away on an extended vacation, and he was home alone.

It was a tri-level home with a lot of stairs. At one point, he apparently had fallen down the stairs, and ended up passing away. He wasn’t found for two weeks! A neighbor noticed the newspapers piling up in the driveway, and called someone. They found him dead at the foot of the stairs. The family came home to the tragedy and soon sold the home and moved away. I was young, so I hadn’t heard this story. It’s not something you share with children, I guess.

My best friend’s family moved there afterward. Weird things happened to them from the moment they moved in. She and her sister both say they remember tripping constantly on the stairs to the living room for no apparent reason, as if someone had literally tripped them! Then one weekend when she was in high school, her mom and dad were at the river, and her sister was out with her boyfriend, my friend came down the stairs and saw an old man sitting on the sofa. She was startled because she didn’t know who he was, and she said he turned to look at her, and he looked—pretty scary—so she ran upstairs to call for help. When she went back downstairs, no one was there.  When her Mom came home that was the point when she first heard the story of the old man dying there, at the base of the stairs.

That wasn’t the last time that happened, but she wouldn’t tell me more. She’s just glad they don’t live there anymore.
